Honey Bees

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to listen to General Conference. Twice a year, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gathers together to listen to leaders instruct and expound on principles of the gospel.

One of the addresses given particularly caught my attention as he spoke of honey bees. M. Russell Ballard shared his thoughts on how lessons can be learned from observing the lives of these small, yet highly organized and necessary creatures of nature.

"It is estimated that to produce just one pound of honey," he explained, "the average hive of 20,000, to 60,000 bees must collectively visit millions of flowers and travel the equivalent of two times around the world. [!] Over its short lifetime of just a few weeks to four months, a single honeybee's contribution of honey to its hive is a mere one-twelfth of a teaspoon."

One-twelfth of a teaspoon! That's maybe a few drops. It seems one single bee's life would be of little significance, yet it is vital for the colony. How cool is it that with the work of thousands giving their best, not only can a part of the earth be pollinated, but a delicious, nutritious pound of honey can bee made:)
