Currently driving through the country side of Jordan on a rather bumpy road. I forget sometimes the blessing it is to have smoothe roads. We just visited one of the seven wonders of the world--Petra! It was amazing...reminded me a lot of Zion's Utah except it also had these ancient, massive, beautiful carved out stone tombs. We spent most of the day hiking through these canyons and rocky deserts seeing these various ancient wonders.
A favorite part (along with the tombs) was talking with the locals. This kind shop keeper invited a friend and I to sit down in the shade in his shop and talked to us about life as a Bedouin, which are a nomadic people. He grew up as a child living in the caves of Petra and was then moved out by the government in the 1980's. They now live outside the park in a small community. His grandfather is still alive and is 106 years old!...The man said his grandfather grew up eating simple foods, no TV, cell phones, plastic. The man had 12 syblings. One of my favorite things in traveling is getting to know the people.
Yesterday, we had another neat experience. A small group of us went out to the little town of Petra after arriving to our hotel and mozied our way into a bakery. The owners noticed a couple of us taking pictures of the tasty displays and invited us upstairs to the fourth floor where they had their small, one-room pita factory! It was so fun. We climbed these stairs forever and ever and when we got to the top, there were thousands and thousands of pita breads being made. The pitas were made, then dropped down a laundry-shoot type hole to the bakery below where they'd fall from the ceiling and land on a counter. Such a fun sight! Pita is a daily food source I will surely miss upon returning home:)
