We just returned from a ten day stay on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. The land is an absolutely beautiful place that rings out with the beauty and peace of the gospel of Christ. The sea was relatively small to what I had been expecting…it looked quite like the blue Bear Lake of the Utah/Idaho area. Warm, fishy water surrounded by hills all around. Definitely a good place to swim, build sand castles, study the gospel and take a breath of fresh air.
One of my favorite parts of the week was watching the sunsets in the evening. The cabins we stayed in were on the eastern shores of the Galilee, so the setting sun was always a beautiful sight to see. It was a good reminder of how refreshing it can be to stop and be still for a while. If you haven't watched the sun rise or set in a while, I'd definately recommend it:)
We also were able to visit many of the towns and places where Christ was believed to have taught, healed and walked among. The Mount of Beatitudes had no ancient tells or old rocks that attracted archaeologists (like most sights we saw), but there was a beautiful church and garden that echoed Christ’s teachings…such a good section of scripture. We also visited the Church in Nain that commemorated when Christ raised the widow’s son from the dead… It was a pretty run down church, but it was a good symbol of Christ's love for people—he walked great distances to help the multitudes and individuals.
A few firsts were also included in the Galilean experiences…I competed in a cake eating contest at a bonfire one night and came in third place! Granted there were only three competers, it was still a surprisingly fun experience. Another interesting moment was an encounter my roommate Ashley and I had with a black and white striped HUGE spider that would jump every time we attempted to catch it in our cup. We ended up having to kill the poor thing, but felt we had no other choice...I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to spiders.
Whelp, that's all for this post--hope you all are enjoying the summer time and shalom again from the Holy Land!
